Why Label Handling Parts Wear Out First

The label handling side of the machine does the most work per cycle and gets the least attention. Magazines, pallets, grippers and transfer drums touch every single label that goes through the line, and they do it thousands of times an hour. When they drift out of spec you do not get a hard failure — you get a slow rise in reject rate that is easy to blame on the labels themselves.

Magazines and consistent feeding

A label magazine that no longer holds the stack squarely will start double-feeding or dropping labels at speed. Worn fingers, tired springs and bent guides are the usual culprits, and all three are inexpensive compared with the downtime they cause. Magazine components also need to match the label size you are actually running, which is worth checking any time you change label stock or supplier.

Pallets, grippers and clean hand-offs

Glue pallets carry the film to the label and gripper cylinders carry the label to the container. Both are precision surfaces. A pitted pallet gives you an uneven film; a gripper that has lost its profile lets the label slip a few degrees on the way to the bottle. What to check before you order

• Label dimensions and stock you are currently running
• Machine model and aggregate type
• Whether the defect appears at all line speeds or only at full rate
• Whether it started after a label, glue or container change

That last question matters more than people expect. A large share of the label handling problems we look at started with a change somewhere else on the line.
